This intimate, kaleidoscopic, daringly original new anime from Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast) has received rapturous critical acclaim.

Young boy Kun is struggling to cope after the birth of his sister. Feeling forgotten, he runs away from home, stumbling upon a magical garden that also serves as a time-travelling gateway; where he meets his mother as a little girl and has a series of adventures with his baby sister, now all grown up.

Brilliantly conceived and drawn, Mirai is both a spectacular fantasy and an emotive story about a young boy gaining perspective on family life, seen through a child’s eyes.

Tempering its flights of fancy with moments of whimsical humour and kid’s-eye realism, this thoughtful treatise on growing pains reveals a realist side of Japanimation that’s all too rarely seen.

It may be the animator's smallest film, but it stands tall. You'll be enchanted.

  • One of the charms of Hosoda’s film is that it assumes its protagonist’s childlike point of view, and so doesn’t waste much time questioning magical occurrences
