Illustrated talk by Dr Venetia Porter, curator of Islamic and contemporary Middle Eastern art at the British Museum
The story behind one of the British Museum’s most significant gifts of the 20th century. The talk will explore and explain the importance of the Godman collection collected by Lower Beeding resident Frederick DuCane Godman who displayed it originally at his home, South Lodge and now featuring in the new Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World at the British Museum. His Islamic pottery collection is of world significance in terms of historical importance and artistic quality. Dr Porter, who has worked with the collection even prior to its arrival at the Museum, will guide you through the superb collection. The talk is part of Horsham Museum & Art Gallery’s events to mark the centenary of Frederick DuCane Godman’s death in 1919, prior to a major exhibition taking place in 2020.
